About Kumartuli
🌟 Welcome to Kumartuli – Kolkata’s Sacred Artisan Quarter
Nestled in the heart of North Kolkata, Kumartuli is a centuries-old artisan village renowned for crafting exquisite clay and fiberglass idols of Hindu deities—most famously, Durga idols for Durga Puja celebrations across the globe. More than 500 artisan families live and work here, passing down their artistic legacy through generations.
Kumartuli is not just a geographical location; it is a living museum of craftsmanship, where devotion, culture, and art blend into a divine experience. Every lane of Kumartuli tells a story—of clay, color, tradition, and timeless artistry.
🕉 A Heritage That Began Over 300 Years Ago
The roots of Kumartuli date back to the early 18th century, during the British East India Company’s expansion in Bengal. When Kolkata began to grow as a major port city, talented potters from Krishnanagar and other parts of Nadia district migrated here to supply household clay items to British merchants and local households.
Over time, as Kolkata evolved socially and culturally, these artisans began to sculpt Durga idols, transforming Kumartuli into the iconic idol-making hub we know today.

🎨 The Unique Art of Making Kumartuli Durga Idols
Every Kumartuli idol undergoes a meticulous, multi-stage creation process rooted in tradition:
1️⃣ The Blessing of Clay: ‘Ganga Mati’
Artisans collect sacred clay from the Ganges riverbank—believed to bless the idol with purity and life.
2️⃣ Structuring the Idol
A bamboo and hay framework forms the base structure of Maa Durga and her entourage.
3️⃣ Applying Layers of Clay
Multiple coats of natural clay are smoothly applied, slowly giving shape to the goddess.
4️⃣ Precision Carving & Facial Features
Kumartuli artists are globally admired for their signature eye-painting style, known as Chokkhu Daan—a moment considered spiritually sacred.
5️⃣ Drying, Polishing & Painting
Traditional, matte, glossy, antique, or customized color themes are applied based on modern preferences.
6️⃣ Final Dressing & Ornaments
Fabric sarees, metallic ornaments, hair styling, and hand-painted details bring the idol to life.
This process takes 3 to 6 weeks, depending on the size and complexity.
